Factors Influencing Implant Surgery Time

The duration of your dental implant surgery depends on several factors

  • Number of implants: The more implants required, the longer the overall surgery time.
  • Case complexity: Complicated cases, such as those involving bone grafts or additional procedures, may extend the duration.
  • Pre-existing oral health: The condition of the surrounding teeth and gums may influence the ease and speed of the implant placement.

How Long Will the Implant Surgery Take?

Dental Implant Placement

In the first stage of dental implant surgery, the oral surgeon will insert a small titanium screw into the jawbone beneath the gum line, where the missing tooth is located. This is the dental implant and serves as a replacement for the missing tooth root structure.

The whole procedure will take about 1-2 hours per implant. If grafts are involved, the procedure may require additional time, extending the duration by 30 minutes to an hour per implant.

Healing and Osseointegration

Though the first surgery is done, there’s still an important stage ahead – the healing process and osseointegration. Osseointegration, where the implant fuses with the jawbone, is crucial for long-term stability. This period of healing can range from approximately 10 weeks to 6 months or even longer.

Abutment Placement and Crown

Once osseointegration is successful, the next stage involves attaching an abutment to the dental implant. The abutment acts as a connector between the implant and the final crown. This minor surgical procedure is relatively quick, usually taking around 30 minutes to an hour per implant. Following the abutment placement, impressions are taken to craft the customized crown, completing the restoration process.
